AEROFLOT COMMITS TO AIRBUS A350XWB

In news that has been waiting for months, Russian flag carrier Aeroflot signed a Memorandum of Understanding for 22 Airbus A350XWB aircraft. Aeroflot's order brings the total number of orders and commitments for the Airbus A350XWB to 248. Aeroflot will also further increase its Airbus fleet with ten new A330-200s, which will be acquired on operating lease.

This order has been gestating for nearly two years. It is amazing the way it ended because the 787 was the airline's first choice. But because it moved too slowly, circumstances (the Kremlin) caught up and changed everything. Lucky for Airbus and no doubt highly irritating to Boeing. Aeroflot could have had 787 deliveries by 2009. Now it will have A330s in 2009 – hardly an appropriate substitute. Oh well, that's politics.

Aeroflot orders, USAF now may not

Aeroflot is going to acquire up to 15 Airbus A330s as a stopgap measure ahead of its much-delayed order for a new long-haul fleet. Is this is the end of the long winding saga – its the Babushka doll of the aerospace industry?

Airbus does have A330 slots, but not to Aeroflot at the price it’s prepared to pay. Also, the Russians are being coy because they think they can still tell Boeing (and the US) they have not ordered Airbus; after all leased aircraft can be returned and second-hand aircraft can be sold and, they think, the B787 can still be added.

Barring any other news, there goes the USAF tanker order. Lets see, 15 A330s for Aeroflot vs. nearly two hundred to the the USAF….? Great math. Mr. Putin against the USAF? No contest. Oh well, Boeing's stock should jump on this news.

Aeroflot goes Airbus

According to Bloomberg – OAO Aeroflot, eastern Europe's largest airline, plans to order 15 Airbus SAS A330 planes as it waits for the world's biggest plane maker to deliver on the A350 program.

Aeroflot is negotiating a deal under which it will begin receiving the first of the long-range A330s late next year as an interim measure before production of the A350 begins, Aeroflot Chief Executive Officer Valery Okulov told reporters in Moscow today. The A350 is Airbus's competitive response to Chicago- based Boeing's 787
Dreamliner.

Aeroflot, based in Moscow, plans further talks with the European manufacturer next week about the order and the purchase of 22 A350s beginning in 2014, said Sergei Koltovich, head of fleet planning. The company had been in talks with Boeing regarding the purchase of 787s, which is scheduled for first delivery in 2008. The A350 is slated to enter service in 2013.

"We're not holding any talks with Boeing at the moment," Okulov said.

Indeed, Boeing likely won't be speaking with Aeroflot for a long time.
