When "Green" is cool

In San Francisco there is a small hotel you should know about. This 86-room boutique hotel is set in the heart of San Francisco — one block from Union Square, twenty steps from the Chinatown gate and around the corner from the Financial District. Here's a map of the actual location.

What makes this place special is that it is the first hotel in San Francisco to be LEED certified. LEED stands for “Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design”. Orchard Garden Hotel was designed to achieve LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. Take a look here for more on LEED.

When you check-in you don't really notice the "eco-ness" of the place. But then you get into the room and notice the trash cans….
and you know you're someplace different. Immediately one starts to separate trash.

But here's the most intriguing aspect. Staying at this hotel requires no real compromises for the non-eco sensitive type. Being "eco"-friendly does not mean you really need to do anything different. The lights run on a clever switch at the door – put in your room card to have lights, take the card out when you leave and the lights plus A/C go out. The room has a huge flat screen TV. There is free WiFi. The room colors are muted and easy on the eye. Peaceful even.

Showering brought this most delightful surprise – the soap smells awesome and the shampoo is amazing! Who would have thought little things would make such an impression? Behind this facade is a delightful surprise. The entire hotel is built around being eco-friendly and staying here provides all the amenities without giving up anything. So you have an excellent location, great staff, pristine facilities and really nice rooms. And you're doing right by nature. It would seem every city could use one of these places.
