US warning on Indonesian airlines

The United States warned its citizens Tuesday against flying on Indonesian airlines following a string of accidents, saying the country's civil aviation authority did not meet minimum international safety standards.

Kind of a bit late wouldn't you say? Indonesia's airlines have been having accidents regularly – for years. Do a Google search to verify this – there are lots of links with pictures. Waiting this long was not a particularly smart thing.

Which leads us to ask – how come Europe came up with a blacklist? Does this not seem like a good thing for the US also? That being the case, Pakistan seems to show PIA's pilots are not real smart, damaging both its brand new 777-300ERs this week. By the way, most of that airline's fleet cannot fly to Europe. When do we get a warning about them?

Hello DOT and State Department? Anyone home? Maybe they are too busy messing with Virgin America.

Indonesia aviation safety – flyer beware

This news is bound to give Indonesia air travelers no comfort.

No Indonesian airline will be closed after ratings of the carriers are announced on Thursday, the country's aviation chief said, amid pressure to improve air safety following a string of accidents in recent months.

A team was set up by the Indonesian government to evaluate transport safety following the disappearance of an Adam Air jet carrying 102 people in January has recommended that airlines found to have violated safety standards be shut down.

Budhi Muliawan Suyitno, Indonesia's director general of civil aviation at the transport ministry, said 20 aviation companies had been put into three rating classes with the lowest batch for airlines that only meet minimal standards of safety.

"All airlines are in those three ratings. The third rating means they have fulfilled the minimum standard of civil aviation safety but they need to do other things," he told reporters at parliament.

"If they are in the third rating, they will receive warnings. If they do not perform in three months, then we will suspend them" from operations, Suyitno said.

This outcome was somewhat predictable. It should also be a warning to anyone flying in Indonesia. It has been the "wild west" of aviation for a while now, with what appears to be minimal government oversight. The time is ripe for an independent aviation safety authority to step in. The world will not wait for Indonesia to take steps.
